How to Create the Perfect Honeymoon in Jamaica

How to Create the Perfect Honeymoon in Jamaica

As a child of the eighties I remember watching television and seeing this beautiful commercial with pristine sand and turquoise waters.  At the end of the commercial a man would say “Come to Jamaica, mon”.  That commercial stuck with me and I made it my business to get to Jamaica.

I guess I wasn’t the only one impacted by that commercial because I have planned more destination weddings, honeymoons and romantic getaways to Jamaica than anywhere else in the Caribbean.  So, today I will show you what all the talk, and sighs and smiles are about concerning Jamaica.  I will also highlight what Jamaica has for honeymooners.  Let’s get started!!

Most Popular Destinations

Montego Bay

Montego Bay or Mo-Bay as the locals call it, is the most well-known location in Jamaica. It is the location of the major international airport and many resorts.  if you are wanting a taste of home while being on your honeymoon this is the perfect place for you.  With wonderful beaches yet, access to a Target.  It’s like having it all if all can be had.  Most of the resorts in Mo-Bay have an upbeat nightlife and endless restaurants.  The city of Mo-Bay likes to party and it shows.  If having an exciting nightlife, a bit of relaxation and a taste of home is on your honeymoon must haves this is the place for you.  Also, being in the dead center of the island it makes trips to other portions of the island easy if you wish to do some exploring.

Negril

Negril, Jamaica
Negril, Jamaica

Negril is located on the world famous 7-mile Beach.  This area of Jamaica is known for it’s luxury and relaxation.  If you truly want to feel away from it all then Negril is the choice for you.  7-mile Beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and water sports abound in this part of the island.  If you are a water baby you will love Negril with it’s calming waters and seemingly never ending sand.  This area gets my top vote for a honeymoon since it has a complete relax and recharge vibe.  Not to mention a quick trip into the city gets you access to the local culture and  restaurants.

Runaway Bay

As far as honeymoon trips to Jamaica are concerned Runaway Bay is the new kid on the block.  Runaway Bay is located on the Northern Shores of Jamaica close to Ocho Rios.   If you are seeking a low-key honeymoon in a off the beaten path location this is the perfect choice.  The landscape here is quite different than other parts of the island and can bring out your curious side.  This is a great place to explore or relax.  If you are a golf enthusiast then look no further because Runaway Bay is where golf courses seem to thrive.

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Ocho Rios is located not far from Runaway Bay on the Northern shore of Jamaica.  Ocho Rios has been one of the most popular honeymoon locations for many years.  This city got a jump start when a cruise port was built there and a wide vary of travelers were able to access this part of the island.  Ocho Rios is a lesson in diversity.  It has luxury resort options as well more budget friendly options as well.  The area is also known for its amazing natural architecture.  One of the most famous place is Dunn River Falls.  If you go to Ocho Rios expect to be asked if you climbed the  Falls.  Oh and don’t forget your water shoes.

Jamaica’s best Resorts

couples resorts

Couples Resorts are only located in Jamaica and are a perfect choice for an adults only all-inclusive experience.  If you would like a perfect mix of activities and relaxation this is the resort for you.  Many say that Couples Resorts created the all-inclusive experience and they set the bar high.  With three resorts across Jamaica there is something available at Couples for every type of honeymooner. My favorite aspect of Couples Resorts is they tend to be smaller in size so you truly feel like you got away from it all.  If you are not a big crowds person and you like a more personalized honeymoon approach check out Couples.

sandals resorts

Sandals Royal Caribbean
Sandals Royal Caribbean

If Couples Resorts created the all-inclusive brand, then Sandals perfected it.  Sandals is mainly based in Jamaica and has several resorts through-out the island.  A Sandals honeymoon is all about luxury and pampering.  If you are considering a Sandals honeymoon then you want to splurge and get the butler level suites.  Even if your budget won’t let you go that high; Sandals properties are still worth it.  If you are looking for a hardcore party atmosphere then Sandals won’t fit the bill.  This resort is perfect for the couple who wants to spend some time together but no so much worried about a lot of structure.  There are activities but they are usually more low key.

breathless Resorts

Breathless resorts
Breathless Resorts-Pool Party

Breathless Resorts has recently come to Jamaica with their initial resort in Montego Bay.  The Breathless Resorts are perfect for the couple who wants their honeymoon to be a true celebration.  From parties by the pool in the morning to risque theme parties on the beach at midnight; Breathless is all about fun.  If you want a slight change of pace even for a few hours then you can hop over to one of Breathless’ sister properties and enjoy their food and activities for free.  Now talk about bang for your buck.

I hope you will consider a romantic honeymoon to Jamaica. If you have any questions don't hesitate to drop them in the comments below. 5 Things to Do in Puerto Rico

5 Things to Do in Puerto Rico

I love Puerto Rico.  It is in my top 10 places to visit whether via land travel or cruising.  This month was my first visit since Puerto Rico was ravaged last year by hurricanes.  The island is still in various states of disrepair but slowly things are improving mostly due to tourism.  I hope that I can inspire you to visit Puerto Rico (it doesn’t require a passport) in the near future.

I am going to share with you my Top 5 Things to Do in Puerto Rico.  Maybe they will motivate you to visit this amazing island for your next trip.

By Kavonda L. Rogers

Isla Verde Beach

Puerto Rico has 270 miles of amazing coastline and Isla Verde Beach is its jewel.  It is the best beach on the island with its white and pink sand.  Luckily, Isla Verde Beach was untouched during last year’s hurricanes even though the surrounding area was.  Yet, and still it is one of the most beautiful places on the island.  Extra Tip-  If you plan on visiting this beach come early or come during the week.  If you come late in the day or on weekends you will be fighting the crowds.

Old San Juan

Puerto Rico was previously ruled by the Spaniards and the older portion of the Puerto Rico capitol shows that history. Old San Juan is home to the castles that the Spanish used to protect and defend the island.  The most popular castle is Castillo de San Cristobal; the largest Spanish fort in the new world.

Old San Juan is the home to blue cobblestone streets and wonderful architecture that dates back to the 16th century and the time of Juan Ponce De Leon.  Ponce De Leon originally settled Puerto Rico and chose Old San Juan as the first settlement.  This area is a history buff’s dream.

El Yunque

If you are looking to see beauty outside the beach, then El Yunque is the place for you.  It is a wonderful place to hike or swim in the Damas Pools.  Some of the Damas Pools were damaged during Hurricane Maria so make sure to check that the Pools are open when you visit.  When I visited you could see them but not swim.

When the entire area is open there is the Angelito Trail which leads you to the Damas Pools.  The trail includes a rope swing into the 8-ft natural pool.  If you have a love for adventure travel then you will love El Yunque.

Street Food in Pinones

If you want some authentic Puerto Rican food then the Pinones is where you want to be.  The Pinones has tons of kiosks (food vendors) right by the beach.  You can try dishes from alcapurria and cacalito which are fried treats that will simply melt in your mouth.

What are these two treats exactly?  Alcapurria is fried dough made from green bananas or the yucca plant and wrapped around either beef or crab.  If you are a seafood lover definitely go for the crab.

Bacalito is salted cod fritter, it’s similar to a pancake with chunks of fish.  It can range from mild to very spicy so order accordingly.

Casa Bacardi

For all of those who have ever enjoyed a Barcardi rum product be proud it is made in Puerto Rico.  The Casa Bacardi tour allows you to take a mixology class to learn Bacardi specialty drinks as well as a bottle of Bacardi rum.  When you arrive, you will be greeted with a Bacardi cocktail.  If you decide to skip the mixology class you can still sample up to five Bacardi Rums of your choice during the tour.

So, are you ready to visit Puerto Rico?  I promise you will not regret it.  It will be amazing.

5 Things to Do at the Panama Jack All Inclusive Resort

5 Things to Do at the Panama Jack All Inclusive Resort

I love Mexican resorts.  I always have my best customer service and pampering experiences in Mexico.  This is a huge statement for me to make because I have been to over 30 resorts.  So, if you planning to visit a resort soon I highly recommend Panama Jack Cancun. Those of us who are 70’s and 80’s babies remember the Panama Jack brand when it was super popular for clothing in the late 80’s and early 90’s.   The resort is located in the Hotel Zone of Cancun near the Caribbean Sea.

By Kavonda L. Rogers

The resort is ocean front and has comfortable rooms to accommodate singles, couples, and families.  The rooms are clean comfortable, swimming pools wonderful and there are even cabanas, sundecks, and a lot of activities.  Also, the food is amazing.  If you are considering a resort vacation especially to Panama Jack Cancun you must do the following:

Book a Swim Up Suite

Panama Jack Resort has six Junior Suite Beachfront Swim-Up rooms with a semi private infinity pool right outside your room.  It’s amazing like having your own private pool.  Swim Up Suites also have reserved beach cabana access and access to Club Panama which is private an available to upper level guests.

They also provide each room with a handcrafted present made by local artisans.  These gifts are the resorts way to giving back to the community and I love it.

Take a Day Trip to Chichén Itzá

This attraction is a little bit of a ride from the resort but worth it.  Chichén Itzá is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is also on the “New Seven Wonders of the World” list.  This collection of Mayan ruins covers   square kilometers.  One of the best parts is the Pyramid of Kukulkan.  The pyramid has four sides and 91 stairs plus a top platform.  The steps total 365 which is one for every day for the year.  I do not think that was by accident.

Visit the Cenotes

Cenotes is the Mayan name meaning “secret well”.  The secret wells are really sinkholes that fill with water and form caves and underground rivers throughout Mexico.  The Il-Kil Cenote is a perfect area to visit after visiting the Chichén Itzá since it is only two miles away.  It is the most popular Cenote in Mexico and includes a waterfall.  The Cenotes are a great place to swim, snorkel and see rare marine life.

Swim in the pools and ocean

The best part of being at any resort is access to the pool and the ocean.  There is nothing better than being able to leave your room and walk directly onto the beach.  Not every resort offers this option, but Panama Jack does and you should take advantage of it.

Have Dinner on the Beach

Panama Jack offers a candlelight sunset dinner on the beach.  It is great for couples and the backdrop is beautiful.

5 Things to Do in Iceland

Top 5 Things to Do in Iceland

From time to time I will veer off the beaten path and share with you destinations outside the norm.  This is one of those times.  Iceland is a beautiful country in Europe that is a bucket list location for many.  It’s beginning to grow on me as well.  If you are planning a trip Iceland is perfect stopover in between other destinations.  Make sure you plan your time in Ireland carefully since there is so much to see.  It is best to plan for 2-3 full days in Ireland to see most of its treasures.  Not sure what to see then check out the list below and as always, I can help you plan the best itinerary for you during you travels.  Let’s get started!

By Kavonda L. Rogers

Whale Watching Tour

There are many tours available that allow you to see whales as well as puffins. You can engage with Naturalists and experience rare sightings that will leave you in awe. It is best to whale watch in the summer months, preferably April through September. Minke whales are the most common in Iceland. Follow instructions carefully and be safe.

Blue Lagoon Spa

This mineral-rich attraction is minutes from the Keflavik International airport. There are many spa options available due to the geothermic forces and many natural elements. The lagoon is man-made and renewed every two days with fresh water. You can easily access the site via car or bus.

West Fjords

Located in a popular peninsula, the Fjords are breathtaking. You need to plan well and leave time to really explore all this area has to offer. They have great attractions. You can visit a myriad of special sites, such as the Icelandic Sea Monster Museum or the famous Látrabjargcliff. There is much to experience in this mountainous remote area. You will have options that will keep you interested while on your expedition.

Skogafoss

The perfect place for you to get a shot with a double rainbow, Skogafoss is the most scenic fall in Iceland. With a drop of over 60 meters, the view is spectacular. There is also a legend of gold that lies within the falls. Take your chance and search if you dare.

Silfra

Silfra is an amazing diving spot located in Thingvellir National Park. It is the crevice between the tectonic plates in North America and Eurasian continents. It is the only place in the world where you can dive between two tectonic plates that shift roughly 2 cm every year. The shifting of the earth creates new caverns and tunnels. There is plenty of wildlife to see on your dive/snorkel. The three main dive sites are; Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral and Silfra Lagoon. The maximum depth is about 207 feet. The water is the purest in the world and you can feel free to take a sip while diving.
