How to Apply for a Passport and Get Approved on the First Try

The key to the lock known as travel is a passport.  If you want to travel outside of your home country it is pretty much a requirement.  If you travel domestically especially by airplane, then if expedites an already tedious process.  Yet, many people find the passport process overwhelming and down right confusing.  As usual I am here to help you clear the hurdles and open the door to the world of travel.  I am going to teach you how to apply for a passport and make sure you get approved on the first try.

How to apply for a passport?

You have some options when it comes to applying for a passport.  The most traditional way is to fill out the form on the State Department’s Website.  For ease I have linked it here.  Once you fill out the form you then will take it to an Acceptance Center near your home.   You can find a list of acceptance centers here.

You will need some items before you go to the intake center.

  1. Birth Certificate– This is where a lot of people get scared.  The intake center will take possession of your birth certificate in order for the State Department to validate it.  In other words, it will get sent to the State Department with your other items.
  2. You state issued identification. No worries in this case they will just make a copy.
  3. The form from the State Department’s website. It needs to be filled out completely and honestly.
  4. Payment.  The cost to apply for a new passport (you’ve never had one before) is $110.  If your nearest intake center is a Post Office, you will need an additional $35 for their processing fee.  Both of these items need to be in the form of a money order or cashier’s check.  They do not accept cash or personal checks.  So be prepared.
  5. Passport photo. You can get a passport photo at your local CVS, Walgreen’s and if you are a AAA member you can get one at the local AAA center for a reduced cost.  Pro tip: Skip the wally world passport photos as they are often rejected by the State Department.

Passport Services

If you want to go the easy route you can pay for a passport service to handle your application process.  These services charge an additional fee on top of your passport application fee.  This is a good option if you just don’t have time to do the process yourself.

Some Common Hurdles to Getting a Passport

Many times, when passports are rejected it often has to do with paperwork.  So, make sure your paperwork is in order.  Other times there are other things that make applying for a passport a special circumstance so let’s touch on some of the more common reasons passport applications are rejected.

  1. You have a felony drug conviction.  Ouch I came out with the big guns, but this is a big reason why a passport application can be rejected.  The reasons why this is important are pretty obvious, so I won’t go any deeper.
  2. You owe back child support. If this is an issue you will be rejected.  Even if it is just one payment you will not be approved.
  3. Your passport photo is incorrect. If you don’t have the perfect passport photo (and don’t forget no smiling) your passport application can be rejected.  Making sure the background is correct, the photo dimensions are correct are very important.
  4. You have had a major life change. If you changed your name (whether by request or marriage) make sure to include a copy of your marriage license or court documents.  If you do not include these documents your application can be rejected.

Once you have done all the items above you just sit back and wait.  Usually passport applications are processed within 6-8 weeks.  Sometimes you can get your passport even sooner.  So, jump in with both feet and get that passport!

I hope I have helped with your travel journey and everything you need to know about how to apply for your passport.

10 First Time Cruise Questions

July 24, 2019 by Kavonda Rogers Leave a Comment

10 First Time Cruise Questions

Cruising is the fastest growing travel segment in the United States. Why?  Mainly because of the enormous amount of bang you get for your buck and because you unpack once and see several destinations.  Veteran cruisers will tell you there is a learning curve for cruising and sometimes it can take a while to go from newbie to savvy.  But no worries; I am here to help.  Today I will answer 10 First Time Cruise Questions.

By Kavonda L. Rogers

Do I need a passport?

This is a yes and no question.  There are two types of cruises: Open looped and closed looped.  Let me briefly explain.

Open looped- When a cruise begins at one port and ends at a different port.  For example a cruise starts in Seattle, Washington but ends in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Closed looped- When a cruise starts and ends at the same port.

If you are traveling on a closed looped cruise you DO NOT need a passport.  You will need a copy of your birth certificate and a state issued id if you are over 16 years of age.

If you are traveling open looped you WILL be required to have a passport.   In either case a passport is highly recommended.

What time should I arrive at the cruise port?

Most cruise lines require you to choose an arrival time so they can expedite their check in process.  Most cruise lines close check-in anywhere from 1-2 hours before the cruise is scheduled to depart.  SO, take your check in time seriously and don’t miss the boat!

What about paying for items on board?

Cruise ships are cashless societies.  This means that you will need to apply a form of payment to your cabin (sometimes called staterooms).  This will be in the form of a debit card/credit card or you can add cash when you board the ship.  This will allow you to use your cabin key to make purchases all over the ship and have them charged to your room.  Just make sure you keep track of your spending.

Can I bring my own alcohol onboard?

This is another yes and no question. It is also one of the most common first time cruise questions I get asked.   If you are speaking in terms of liquors and spirits such as rum, gin etc. the answer is no.  If you are a wine drinker most cruise lines will allow you to bring at least one bottle of wine per person on board.  If you want to open it on your own, then don’t forget your wine bottle opener.  Most cruise lines charge a corkage fee of at least $25 if thy open it.

Do I have to pay extra to exit the ship?

First Time Cruise Questions by Honeymoons by Vonda, cruise questions, cruise, Caribbean cruise

I always chuckle when I am asked this question.  So, for that reason alone it had to make my common cruise questions list.

You do not need to pay any fees to exit the ship at a port.  You have already paid for that right when you paid for the cruise.  Now if you chose to take a shore excursion then those have an additional cost.  I think that may be where some of the confusion arises.  Please note that shore excursions are optional.

Do I have to get off the ship at the port?

No, you do not.  Many times, you may go on a cruise and one of the ports is a place you have visited many times before.  For me that port is Nassau, Bahamas.  If I am out of my fave facial products I may jump off and go to Tresor Rare and other times I just hang out on the ship.  If you stay onboard it is a great tie to enjoy a spa treatment or hang out by the nearly empty pool.

Do I have to eat in the main dining room?

The main dining room is also called the MDR.  It is the main hub for dinner.  You are not required to eat in the main dining room because there are so may options around the ship.  Mainly there is a buffet available on the pool deck.  If you are a first-time cruiser, then check out the main dining room once because it is a unique experience.

Do I have to follow the dress code in the Main Dining Room?

first time cruise questions by Honeymoons by Vonda, first timer cruisers, cruising,

If this was ten years ago, I would have said a resounding yes. Now, the times have changed, and we have new generations who are not big on dressing up.  So, to say the least the rules for dress in the MDR are lax or just overlooked.  As long as you don’t walk in with your bath suit or swim trunks you might pass muster.  Yet, most guests stick with business casual as the standard.

What are gratuities?

Out of all my first-time cruise questions this is the most controversial.  Gratuities are the tips that are given to the people who clean and service your cabin, who serve you food whether at the buffet or in the Main Dining Room.  The gratuity charges are based on your room category and the length of your cruise.  The longer the cruise the larger the gratuity naturally.  Lower room categories (interior, ocean view, and balcony) have the same gratuity rate and suites have a higher rate.  Each cruise lines charges a different amount, but they all start at 13.99 per day per person and go up from there.

Should I use a travel agent or travel advisor?

If you have been a part of any travel forum you can see that this is a first-time cruise question that really sparks hot conversation.  As a travel professional I urge people to use travel agents.  Why? Because travel agents spend a lot of time, energy, and money to learn about travel and specific destination to be of service to their clients.  We know the best resorts in an area. We know the best cruise ships for kids, we know the best cruise destination for honeymooners.  We also know the best prices and the best ties to travel.  We are like google but for travel.  We go above and beyond to give our clients the best value for their money.  Of course, you can book your own travel but if you have never cruised before or never visited the Bahamas; why not call a professional to help guide the way.  I do not charge fees to my clients so there is no additional cost to you.  #travelagentsrock

Wrap Up

I hope that by now you are well prepared to embark on the process of your first cruise or maybe the first cruise in a long time.  If you are a first timer tell when your cruise is leaving and what cruise line you chose in the comments below.  If you are a veteran cruiser tell me the first ship you ever cruised on.  I can’t wait to hear from you.

6 Things to Never Bring on a Cruise

April 26, 2019 by Kavonda Rogers Leave a Comment

6 Things to Always Leave at Home When You Cruise

This is the cruising time of year.  At least for me.  The majority of my cruise groups are in preparation for their upcoming cruises that happen during the summer months.  During this time I get a so many questions about what to pack and “can I take this”.  Yet, rarely does anyone ask what NOT to take on their cruise.  Cruise ships are floating hotels and they have problems similar to hotels but problems that are unique to sailing vessels.

I am going to share 6 things that should never go with you on your next cruise.  Actually if these items are found in your luggage they can very well be confiscated.  So, save yourself the heartache and avoid the items I list below.  Let’s get started.

IMG_8636
By Kavonda L. Rogers

Household Appliances

I know some people love their morning cup of coffee or a crisply ironed shirt but these items are not allowed on cruise lines. Fire is the biggest issue for any ship at sea.  Household appliances pose a huge fire threat.  Two cruise lines offer laundry facilities: Holland America (some ships) and Carnival Cruise Lines (fleet wide). Also, Downy Wrinkle Releaser works wonders when an iron is not around.   As for the coffee you can order it from room service on any ship or find a cup on the pool deck.

Any and All Candle Products

Open flames of any type are completely forbidden.  Remember the fire hazard on cruise ships I mentioned in Household Appliances?  Instead bring a spray air freshener or linen spray to help keep your cabin fresh.  If you are flying their are tons of non-aerosol sprays that can be added to your checked luggage.

Weapons and Restraints

Guns, handcuffs, brass knuckles and martial arts equipment (flails, throwing stars, belt buckle knives, etc.) aren’t allowed on-board cruise ships. Swiss army knives aren’t banned on all cruises; Carnival allows knives on-board, as long as the blades are less than 4 inches long, while Royal Caribbean prohibits all knives. The TSA has its own set of rules for flying.  So, if you are flying to your cruise port; do not pack these items at all.

Liquor or Beer

Many cruise lines allow you to bring up to two bottles of wine or sparkling cider on-board. Beer and liquor of any kind is forbidden.  You are allowed to bring a 12 pack of canned sodas on to most cruise ships but this rule changes frequently so ask your travel professional or check with your cruise line.

Related: 5 Myths About Cruising

Toys for big kids and little kids

The idea of bringing motorized toys on-board to help you navigate the ship; sounds great. Yet, items like segways and in-line skates are a no-no. Also, items that can propel from the ship like kites, motorized cars, floaties, noodle tubes are not allowed. Leave the drones at home as well since maritime law forbids such items.  If you are worried about a child being bored travel sized board games, or handheld video games are a great alternative.

large amounts of cash

Cruise ships are cashless environments. Many guests chose not to use their credit or debit cards for their shipboard accounts.  I think this is a great idea but be careful.   Purchases are made via cards that are issued by the cruise ships and double as room keys.  If you wish to apply cash to your account then do it as soon as you arrive on the ship as not to make yourself a target.  If you want to shop at ports then use your credit card at a reputable store and keep smaller amounts of cash for booth shopping.

Were you aware of the forbidden items on cruise ships? Are you planning a cruise vacation in the near future? If so tell me where you are going. Also, if you want more tips and info about all things travel sign up for my newsletter below.

5 Free Things to Do in the Bahamas

April 19, 2019 by Kavonda Rogers Leave a Comment

5 FREE THINGS TO DO IN THE BAHAMAS

I call the Bahamas the starter kit to the Caribbean.  With more than 700 islands it is a popular land and cruise destination.

My first land trip and cruise trip traveled to the Bahamas and I still love the excitement of visiting this property over and over again.

Since the Bahamas is so easy to reach (especially via cruise) I recommend it to first time travelers often and they have not been disappointed.  The Bahamas is affordable, fun and diverse so it makes it ideal for romantic getaways, family vacations and honeymoons.

Below are 5 of my favorite must see attractions for a visit to the Bahamas.

Versailles Gardens

The Versailles Gardens are located on Paradise Island, Bahamas and overloos the Nassau Harbor.

This is perfect spot to visit if you are looking for a break from the usual beach visits.  This historically garden is a great place to visit and has an amazing view of the sunset.

Also, the garden is rarely busy so you can take as many photos as you wish of the beautiful scenery.

The Queen's Staircase

The Queen’s staircase of a major historical landmark in Nassau.

Usually, it is called the 66 Steps by the locals and it once provided a direct route from Fort Fincastle to Nassau, Bahamas.

paradise beach

There are a lot of beaches in the Bahamas.  They all have varying degrees of interest and beauty.  Paradise Beach is a favorite for many travelers.

This beach is also great for snorkeling but be careful of the strong waves.

junkanoo beach

If you are traveling to the Bahamas via cruise ship this is the perfect beach to visit.  It is a short 15 minute walk from the cruise ship and it’s free to enter.

During your walk you will get to explore downtown Nassau while you are trekking to the beach.

It’s not the fanciest beach in Nassau but it is nice.  If you want to splurge some head over to the Bikini Hut and for $35 and you will get a lunch, unlimited shots and tropical drinks, 4 beers and an umbrella beach chair.

Dean's Blue Hole (Long Island)

If you are into adventure with your travel Dean’s Blue Hole is the spot for you.  The Hole itself is 663 feet deep and has gorgeous blue water.

If big holes are not your cup of tea; travel to the beach nearby and let the adventure members of your group have a moment.

I hope you will consider a trip to the Bahamas. Are you considering any of these stops for your Bahamas vacation? If so let me know in the comments below. Also, if you want more tips and info about all things travel sign up for my newsletter below.

Top 10 Honeymoon Planning Tips

March 29, 2019 by Kavonda Rogers Leave a Comment

Top 10 Honeymoon Planning Tips

Humans have been getting married for centuries and by know, you think it would be easy.  Instead, it seems to get more complicated.  It can take over 100 hours to plan the average wedding.  Yet, most couples only spend around 2 -3 hours planning their honeymoon.  Talk about irony!  Over 100 hours on 1 day and 3 hours on something that lasts 7-14 days.  After spending over 20 years planning weddings and almost 10 years planning honeymoons; I have helped hundreds of couples make their dreams come true.  Yet, the honeymoon often takes the back seat even though it means so much to the couple.  Today I will provide 10 honeymoon tips to help make the most of your 2-3 hours of honeymoon planning.  So, your 7-14 days of honeymoon time will be just as amazing as the day you said your vows.

IMG_8636
By Kavonda L. Rogers

Before You Leave

  1. Make your honeymoon a part of your wedding planning process. Yes, write it down and make it a part of the process.  This will allow you to stay on top of the planning and not wake up 2 months prior to your wedding knowing the honeymoon has been forgotten.
  2. Be Realistic. That word honeymoon holds a lot of weight.  It conjures images of certain things in your mind.  No reason to think that your honeymoon must be perfect.  Relax, have fun and know that there will be bumps in the road (delayed flights, or the air conditioning goes out in the transfer on the way to the resort).  Take it all in stride and know you’ll laugh about it in 10 years.
  3. Decide what type of honeymoon you want. Honeymoons come in all shapes and sizes.  You can go to the beach, you can backpack around Europe, you can take a Hawaiian cruise.  The options are endless, and the choice is yours.  Just make sure you know what type of honeymoon appeals to you as a couple.
Honeymoon Planning
  1. Hire a travel agent. I’m not saying this because I am one.  I am saying it because it takes another task off your already overloaded plate.  A travel agent can handle all the details of your honeymoon from start to finish.  No time spent researching or waiting for answers in Facebook groups.  Cut out all the middlemen and go to the source: a great travel agent.
  2. Don’t forget about home. I know the last few days before a wedding are super busy and sometimes stressful.  Yet, the last thing you want to do after a relaxing and rejuvenating honeymoon is a messy home.  Before you leave have a cleaning service come in or maybe even clean it up yourself.  Personally, I prefer the first option.

While You Are Gone

  1. No honeymoon wars! Remember that movie Bride Wars. Well, sometimes couples get up in Honeymoon Wars.  Do not get caught up in trying to trump someone else’s honeymoon.  Whatever you and your soon to be spouse chooses as your honeymoon plan is fabulous.  No one else matters.
  2. Don’t forget your documents. Nothing ruins a honeymoon faster than a misplaced id or a lost passport.  Before you leave for your honeymoon put all your documents in one location and make sure it is with your luggage.  Also, take photos of all your documents with your phone just in case anything gets lost.
  3. Take too many photos. You will never get to relive this moment ever again.  So, wear out your camera and your phone.  Make sure to ask some fellow travelers to take some photos of you so you are both in the picture.  I promise no one will turn you down when you share you are on your honeymoon.
Sandals Over Water Bungalow Couples Massage
  1. Unplug. I know I just said take a lot of photos with your phone.  Yet, also spend time unplugged.  I know it will be hard, but you will thank me later.  Enjoy the time you have alone as a couple with no family, no friends, no distractions. It will be amazing.
  2. Pack light. Try to pack items that are multi-use.  Also, consider pieces that are interchangeable.  I have overpacked more times than I can count only to come home with half of my suitcase unused.  Now I pack light and selectively.

Tell me about your honeymoon plans. If you have any questions don't hesitate to drop them in the comments below. If you are considering Jamaica for your honeymoon let me know where you are visiting in the comments below. Also, if you want more tips and info about all things travel sign up for my newsletter below.

The Go-Getter’s Guide to a Hawaii Honeymoon

March 22, 2019 by Kavonda Rogers Leave a Comment

The Go-Getter's Guide to a Hawaii Honeymoon

I have complete love and hate relationship with Hawaii.  On one hand, I love seeing the beautiful sights, gorgeous beaches, amazing people and great food.  Yet, on the other hand… .it’s like a puzzle you never finish.  It never fails that when I am on my flight back from Hawaii I always end up sitting next to someone who makes me feel my trip was a failure.  They always ask if I enjoyed my trip and then it happens! They asked if I went to see some attraction that I knew nothing about.  Trip busted!  Yet, hopefully, I can help avoid those pitfalls for you.  I will give you the information you need to have an amazing Hawaiian honeymoon.  Since Hawaii is so all-encompassing I am breaking this blog into three parts.  Part 1: Islands, Part 2: Resorts and Part 3: Sites & Activities.  So, let’s get started.

IMG_8636
By Kavonda L. Rogers

Hawaii is not just one island but many islands.  There are 6 Major Islands in Hawaii, but I will focus on the 3 major islands that most honeymooners travel to; Oahu, Maui and the Big Island.  The first thing to know is that Hawaii is considered a luxury destination so expect the average Hawaii honeymoon to cost around $5-7,000 dollars.  The cost can be even more depending on which type of resort you chose and the island you visit.

Most Popular Islands

Oahu

Oahu, Hawaii
Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu is the most well-known Hawaiian island.  It contains the state capital of Honolulu as well as Central Oahu, Leeward Coast, Northshore and Windward Coast.   The main heartbeat of Oahu is Honolulu.  This area has it all from luxury resorts, fine dining and some of the best shopping in the world.  When most honeymooners consider a Hawaii honeymoon, this is the area they gravitate toward.  Believe me, Oahu is worth the trip.

Maui

Maui, Hawaii
Maui, Hawaii

Maui is called The Valley Isle and is also the second largest Hawaiian island.  If you are a couple who dreams of a beach honeymoon, then this is the island for you.  This island has amazing beaches, whale watching, and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.  Maui has five areas which are East, South, West, Central, and Upcountry.  Each area has unique terrain and landscape but all of it is beautiful.  If you are flying into Maui you will fly into Central Maui.

Big Island

Big Island, Hawaii
Big Island, Hawaii

The Big Island as it states is the largest of the Hawaiian islands.  It is so large that it has 12 climate zones on one island.  Talk about diversity!  This is one of my favorite parts of Hawaii because it has a little something for everyone.  It has the beaches, it has the plains, it has the mountains.  You name it you can find it in the Big Island. It is perfect for adventure couples because there is a vast array of hiking trails, climbs, and other activities. If you want your Hawaii honeymoon with adventure then the Big Island should certainly be on your list.
